30JunThe Social Networking Dilemma

I don’t know about you, but keeping track of my online persona gets to be insanely difficult with the number of social networking sites.  MySpace, Facebook, LinkeIn, etc…  The list goes on and on with no apparent end in site.  There has to be a way to pull it all under one identity, but know this is easier said than done.  I believe the worlds scientist are working on it this very minute somewhere in a basement think tank.  That and how to make crazy ridiculous amounts of money.  If they pull it off, they’ll probably get it too.  And do you know what they’ll do with it?  Start a new all encompassing social networking site, lol.  Probably not, but I’ve seen this approach before and hope to god that they think of something better than a social network that pools other social networks.  This just adds another social networking layer, which is fixing the problem using the problem your trying to fix.

The social networking has obviously boomed over the last few years, but as anyone who’s invested in them (not myself) will tell you that the social network scene is still in its infancy/childhood.  There’s bound to be new technologies, be it software or hardware or combination, that will make sitting down at your computer an all encompassing social network experience where we have only a single online identity to rule them all.  Can’t imagine what that technology would be, but not really sure I care.

And why do I rant about this now?  Well, because I’m seeing more and more of my friends use these god forsaken networks and none of them use all of them so I’m stuck with identities on just about every single one of them.  Nevermind the logging in part, that’s not really an issue.  It’s the fact that if I want to let my friends know I just went on vacation and posted some pictures of it, I have to do it 15 times which really sucks.  Who wants to upload the same picture on 15 different social networks.  Shit, who has the time?
